Porr seals €165m deal to build waste treatment plant in Poland

Austria-based construction contractor Porr and Italian engineering firm Termomeccanica Ecologia have secured a €165 million contract to deliver a new thermal waste treatment plant at the Włocławek Energy Center in central Poland.

The scheme, awarded by EnergiaNova, part of PreZero Polska, will run for 29 months and marks the consortium’s third such project in the country after earlier installations in Rzeszów and Gorlice.

The consortium will construct six buildings and supporting infrastructure on a site near the Municipal Heat Energy Company on Zielna Street.

The technological part of the contract includes systems for fuel extraction and storage, a boiler, flue gas cleaning, a steam turbine, slag storage, and associated auxiliary installations. Delivery will cover detailed design, construction, commissioning and handover.

The facility is designed to process 90,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste a year. It is expected to generate around 700,000 GJ of heat and 45,000 MWh of electricity annually. All heat output will be supplied to the municipal network, while electricity will be fed into the National Power System.

The project is intended to support Włocławek’s efforts to cut coal use and improve local air quality through the development of a more efficient district heating system. The city has a population of about 100,000.
