Polish motorway gets €250 million boost

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €250 million loan to support construction of a major highway in Poland.

The funds will be lent to Polish bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (GK) for the construction of a 144km section of the A1 motorway from Toruń to Stryków in central Poland.

GK, in its capacity as the state development bank of Poland, carries out activities mandated by the government.

This is the second tranche of EIB finance for the development of this section of the A1 – the EIB previously provided a loan of €350 million.

The project belongs to a wider programme of the overall development of 580km of the A1, which is part of the priority trans-European network (TEN-T) corridors – a programme of crucial transport corridors across Europe earmarked for EU funding.

The A1 motorway links the Baltic Sea across Poland to the Czech Republic and Slovakia to Austria. It is planned to provide a modern transit connection between Gdańsk and Vienna via Katowice and Brno.
