A director overseeing the construction of what is expected to be the world’s biggest airport, King Salman International Airport in Riyadh, has set out a series of phases for its construction.

The airport is expected to cover 57 square kilometres and handle 120 million passengers per year, which would make it the largest in the world in terms of passenger numbers. It will be built on a brownfield site over the existing King Khalid International Airport.

UK-based Mace has won the role of delivery partner on the project, while it is being designed by architecture company Foster + Partners.

Marco Mejia, an executive director of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, told media at a summit in Rio de Janeiro that a new private aviation terminal would open by 2026, a new runway by 2027, a new terminal by 2028, an ‘iconic’ terminal building by 2030.

The airport is expected to be ready to receive visitors to the Riyadh Expo in 2030, ahead of the World Cup in the Kingdom in 2034.
