Perkins engine development

Perkins has been awarded a grant of £13 million (€17.8 million) from the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) powertrain research facility, towards the development of new off-highway diesel engines.

Funding for the venture, which is supported by the UK government, will focus on developing diesel engines with reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions.

The project, which will total £25.1 million (€34.3 million) of investment, will be a collaborative scheme based at Caterpillar-owned Perkins’ UK facility in Peterborough. It will be carried out with the Denso International motoring technology group, Loughborough University, Imperial College London and Cambridge-based CMCL Innovations.

Mark Stratton, general manager of Perkins medium engines, said improving engine performance and fuel efficiency would be among the project’s core goals.

The collaboration will create 175 jobs and will work on engine technology over the next three years.
