New Webuild factory to regenerate old tunnel boring machines

Italian construction group Webuild has created a new factory to assemble and regenerate used tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

The company said that the facility, in Terni, will allow it to reduce its capital expenditure and operational costs by modifying and updating TBMs for future projects.

Webuild has a total of 58 TBMs, including those already operating, those being assembled, and those that have been ordered for planned projects.

Work on TBMs to service or upgrade them can take between five and nine months. Webuild said that the extent of its use of TBMs – in Sicily along it is working on seven rail projects that will require 19 TBMs – had spurred its decision to invest in the foundation of WEM (Webuild Equipment & Machinery).
