Liebherr supports German hydrogen-powered project

Liebherr is supporting one of Germany’s first low-emission construction projects in Buchholz in der Nordheide, providing battery-electric construction machinery and energy storage solutions as part of the Hyperlink hydrogen transport initiative.

The pilot site features two electric Liebherr machines: the L 507 E wheel loader and the A 916 E wheeled excavator.

Both machines are designed to match the performance of conventional diesel models while operating with zero local emissions.

The L 507 E can run up to eight hours on a single charge, and its modular battery system allows extended runtime.

The A 916 E excavator operates for up to nine hours and is equipped with a 260 kWh battery split into four modules.

Both machines are powered by Liebherr’s LPO 100 battery storage system, which the company said provides an off-grid, stable electricity supply.

As well as the energy system, a mobile hydrogen generator from e-power and a rooftop photovoltaic array from SunPlate are also being used.

This, said Liebherr, allows the construction site to operate entirely on renewable and low-emission energy sources.

The project, delivered in collaboration with FRIEDRICH VORWERK, Gasunie, and other partners, is a pilot designed to show that technically demanding construction work, such as pipeline installation, can be carried out today using low-emission machines and integrated energy systems.

It forms part of the Hyperlink project, a 1,000-km hydrogen network being developed by Gasunie across northern Germany, linking green hydrogen production and import sources with industrial users.
