Major US city convention centre to get nearly US$4 billion expansion

The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas, US, is already one of the nation’s largest buildings of its type, but construction of a new expansion will lend credence to that age old saying: Everything is bigger in Texas.

Set to cost US$3.7 billion, construction will add 500,000 sq ft (46,452m2) to the centre’s overall footprint, which will bring the total coverage to 2.5 million sq ft (232,257m2).

An emphasis on overhauling the facility’s individual meeting capacity highlights the project; once complete, individual meeting rooms and ballroom space will increase almost triple to 430,000 sq ft (39,948m2).

A consortium – named Inspire Dallas – including consultants, developers, and builders is leading the scheme, including real-estate developers Matthews Southwest, consulting firm Kaizen Development Partners, building and civil construction company Azteca Enterprises, and about 30 subcontractors.

Work started earlier this month and is expected to run to 2028 or 2029.
