Liebherr and Russian truck manufacturer Kamaz OJSC have signed a joint venture to develop a range of 6-cylinder, 12 litre engines. The agreement includes construction of engines to Kamaz’s specifications, along with the setting-up of a new production line and quality assurance systems.

The engines, which will be produced in four power categories, will be used in Kamaz trucks and special vehicles for the oil and gas industry. Liebherr said it also offers a gas engine for mobile vehicles, based on the Liebherr-Kamaz joint venture unit.

Liebherr has developed and manufactured diesel engines for more than 30 years. The company says its products are characterised by a good power to weight ratio, as well as a strategy to deal with the Euro 5 and Euro 6 exhaust emissions legislation for on-highway trucks. Features include a common rail injection system and Liebherr’s own engine control units.

Although Liebherr is best known as a construction equipment manufacturer, its components division offers a range of products, including diesel and gas engines, injection systems, axial piston machines, hydraulic pumps and motors, hydraulic cylinders, oversized bearings, gearboxes and winches, switchgear as well as electric and electronic components and systems.
