Larsen & Toubro wins contract to build line on India’s Agra Metro

India’s biggest construction company, Larsen & Toubro, has won a contract to build line 2 for the Agra Metro Phase 1 project in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The project involves designing and building the line from Agra Cantonment to Kalindi Vihar along a 15.1km stretch of elevated viaduct. There will be 14 stations along the route, as well as 2.6km of line connecting the metro line to a local depot.

Larsen & Toubro did not give a precise value for the project but put it in the range of ₹ Cr 1,000-2,500 (USD$119 million – US$297 million).

Architectural finishes for the stations and electrical and mechanical works are also in scope and Larsen & Toubro said it would aim to complete the project within a “stringent timeline” of 30 months.

Commenting on the order win, Mr S V Desai, whole-time director and senior executive vice- president (Infrastructure), L&T, said, “L&T remains at the forefront of urban infrastructure development and contributing to the modernisation of India’s metro networks in line with its strategic goals. This project will leverage L&T’s extensive expertise in engineering and high-quality execution.”

The city of Agra in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh is home to the iconic Taj Mahal. The city’s new Metro system comprises a total of 29.6km of line. Line 1 runs from Silkandra to Taj East Gate, over 14.3km, 6.6km of which are elevated sections. The whole of line 2 is elevated. Together, the two lines aim to improve mobility for its two million inhabitants.

Spanish engineering firm Typsa is leading a consortium that is carrying out general advisory work on the comprehensive detailed design.
