Key Polish power upgrade

Polish company Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) has confirmed a 4 billion PLN (€950 million) power generating upgrade at a plant in Turow.

Construction of the upgraded facility, which is reportedly capable of generating 450 MW is due to start shortly and comes as the company increases its operation across its power generating portfolio.

According to PGE, the introduction of the new coal-burning power unit would reduce the Turow facility’s environmental emissions over its predecessors by a total of up to 25%.

The project’s announcement follows the release of its quarterly results, which showed stable year-to-date revenues of PLN 6.6 billion (€1.5 billion). It attributed this to ongoing contracts modernising Poland’s largest power plant at Belchatow, and other tenders including wind energy ventures.

These included successful bids for the Lotnisko and Reskos II wind farms, which would involve creating equipment capable of generating 166MW. The company said it was aiming to have 529MW of onshore wind capacity by the end of 2015.

The firm is also in discussion over plans to tender for creating a new nuclear power station within Poland, which will be taken forward in January next year.
