JCB unveils new generation backhoe loader
19 April 2010
JCB has unveiled its new generation of backhoe loaders, featuring new styling and impressive fuel savings. According to Tim Burnhope, group managing director for product development and commercial operations, "This is our most fuel-efficient backhoe loader ever."
The key innovation is under the bonnet, where a third hydraulic pump has been added for more efficient digging. This 'ECO DIG' innovation means excavation can be carried out at lower engine revs, cutting fuel consumption by up to -15%.
In addition, ECO ROAD and ECO LOAD innovations means overall fuel consumption is lowered by -16%.
In terms of styling, the front of the machine features a sloping hood and grill, improving visibility and minimising the chance of damage from collisions. The cab interior has also been restyled, with more ergonomic controls, clearer instrumentation, automotive style steering wheel and pedals, and more durable finishes. Operators will notice the power brakes, which are proportional, for greater responsiveness.
Market gains
Despite the recession, JCB says it has strengthened its position as the world's largest manufacturer of backhoe loaders, with its global share rising from 35% in 2008 to 41% last year.
Much of this is due to the company's dominance in India, the world's largest backhoe loader market, but as CEO Alan Blake said, there are other factors at play, "It is partly about India, but other developing markets are seeing the advantage of the backhoe loader, and we are well-positioned."
JCB has backhoe loader factories in China and Brazil, but the facility in India, about an hour south of Delhi, is the jewel in the crown. The Faridabad factory is the largest dedicated backhoe loader plant in the world, with the capacity to produce 100 machines per shift - that is one backhoe loader coming off the production line every four minutes.
