Chairman of UK-based construction equipment manufacturer JCB Sir Anthony Bamford is to enter the House of Lords as a Conservative peer.

Sir Anthony was appointed to the upper house of the UK Parliament – one of 30 new peers chosen by the government. The role of the unelected peers in the House of Lords is to check and challenge government policy.

Sir Anthony has been chairman of JCB since 1975, taking the reins from his father, Joseph Bamford. He has presided over the manufacturer’s rapid global expansion, including the establishment of its first operation in India.
