A 60:40 joint venture between Indian contractors Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Coastal Projects has won the INR 785 crore (US$ 120 million) contract for a 9.5 km rail tunnel between Tupul and Imphal on the new Jiribam to Tupul line in Eastern India.

The client for the project is Indian government body Northeast Frontier Railway, and HCC says it is the fourth tunnel contract it has been awarded on the Jiribam to Tupul project. The three previous contracts were for a 3.25 km tunnel between Dholakal and Kaimai Road, the second for a 3.3 km tunnel between Kambiron Road and Thingou stations and the third for a 4.9 km long tunnel between Kaimai Road and Kambiron Road stations.

Commenting on the win, HCC president & CEO Arun Karambelkar said, “HCC is proud to receive the fourth order from Northeast Frontier Railway. It is testament to the confidence enjoyed by the company in successfully executing complex tunnelling work. HCC with its sound engineering expertise and committed team is all set to leverage the opportunities in the infrastructure space.”

The Jiribam-Tupul railway project is an 84 km line-with more than 39 km of tunnels.
