A joint venture between Impregilo (65%) and Parsons (35%) has been awarded the US$ 253 million contract to design and build a rainfall and waste water collection and treatment system in Washington, D.C., US.

The Anacostia River Tunnel scheme is part of DC Water’s Clean Rivers project. It involves the construction of a hydraulic tunnel that will run for most part under the Anacostia River, a tributary of the Potomac.

The 3.8 km long, 7 m internal diameter tunnel will be fed by six water collection wells, each sunk to a depth of 30 m. The tunnel will collect and convey waste waters and rainfall separately, thereby avoiding river pollution caused by combined sewer overflows that occur during intense rainfall.

The project is expected to take 54 months to complete

Other active contracts for Impregilo in the US at present building a section of the San Francisco metro, a water collection and transportation system underneath Lake Mead in Las Vegas and the construction of the new “Gerald Desmond” bridge at the port of Long Beach, California.
