Norway’s national railway infrastructure company, Bane NOR, has awarded a €185 million contract to Implenia, to build the longest railway bridge in the country.

The Swiss contractor says it will promote sustainable methods of construction on the double-track Tangenvika bridge, utilising prestressed concrete and ensuring excavated materials are stored locally to minimise the need for transportation.

The bridge will span Lake Mjøsa, approximately 50km north of the Norwegian capital Oslo, with 1,000m built over water, plus a further 2km extending over land.

Implenia will use digital technology to design the bridge and BIM (building information modelling) in its construction, which will include a wildlife overpass.

The project is set to break ground this year, with completion anticipated in 2027.

Christian Späth, the company’s head of civil engineering, commented: “The project has a clear focus on sustainability – one of Implenia’s five corporate values. We will live this in the project by working systematically to meet both the technical and ecological requirements.”
