Sudan:Unexpectedly hard ground conditions called for foundations contractor Bauer Spezialtiefbau to fly in additional drilling rigs to keep work on the Merowe Dam in Sudan on track. The German-based company is installing a 24000 m2 vertical diaphragm cut off wall and 5700 m2 of secant bored piled walls for the US$ 714 million scheme on the River Nile. Main contractor for the project is a Chinese joint venture of Sinhydro Corporation and the China International Water and Electric Corporation. When the scheme is completed in 2009, the dam will create a 170 km long reservoir which will be used for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation.
