Authorities in Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar have launched an international tender process to support the construction of a US$1.3 billion subway system.

The chosen company will provide consulting services for the construction of the metro project and will also be responsible for developing the project’s terms of reference and technical specifications.

The line will run 17.7km from Sonsgolon intersection to Amgalan market. There will be 14 stations spaced around 1.3km apart and a total of 6.6km of the line will run underground.

The project aims to reduce pressure on the city’s road network by transporting up to 17,000 people per hour, with a journey along the whole line expected to take 27 minutes.

The line is set for completion in 2030, with a total of US$53.5 million expected to be spent on consulting services over the life of the project.

More information on the tender process, which closes on 18 March, is online here.

Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, K. Nyambaatar, said, “The construction of Ulaanbaatar’s new subway system will deliver significant benefits for local citizens and support the long-term, sustainable growth of our city, creating more opportunities for those living and working here.

“The launch of this open tender process is another milestone in delivering this exciting project, and I invite interest from all over the world in partnering with us to turn this opportunity from ambition into reality.”
