Hochtief wins major PPP contract to refurbish and build new Berlin office complex

Contractor Hochtief has won a public-private partnership (PPP) deal to refurbish and build new offices for the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) in Berlin, Germany.

Hochtief will subsequently operate and maintain the offices on Puschkinallee for a 25-year period after construction work is completed.

Construction work will start this October and last for around five years.

One of the major players in the German real estate market, BImA manages property belonging to the federal republic, according to commercial principles.

The huge organization has a balance sheet of nearly €24.7 billion and generates €2.5 billion a year in property sales and rental income.

The buildings in the Treptow-Köpenick area of Berlin that will house BImA will cover a total area of 87,000 sq m.

Work involves the refurbishment of four existing properties, which will be linked with new buildings and extensions.

In addition to offices, Hochtief will build training and conference areas, technical operations rooms and a canteen.

It will also build charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes. The roofs of the buildings will be equipped with photovoltaic systems to generate electricity.

Sandra Arendt, responsible for the public building construction segment of Hochtief PPP Solutions, said, “Only a few weeks after having being awarded the contract for construction and operation of the state laboratories in Kassel with a three-digit million volume, we are now pleased to have won another major contract which we will implement together with the project team of Hochtief Building’s Berlin and Erfurt branches.”
