A new £450 million (US$568.6 million) film and television studio, set to be one of the largest in Europe, has won planning permission to be built in Sunderland, UK.

Crown Works Studios received the green light from Sunderland City Council earlier this week.

The application included detailed planning for the construction of 20 soundstages with attached office buildings, production workshops, a gateway building and supporting infrastructure.

The complex is expected to attract global productions worth £644 million (US$813.7 million) once complete.

Turner & Townsend’s North East-based team provided cost and project management services on the project, which is being developed by Fulwell Cain Studios, a joint venture between entertainment company Fulwell 73 and investment firm Cain International.

The project could break ground as early as this summer (2024) with the construction of the first six stages as part of Phase One. Completion of further phases are due to complete by 2028.

Patrick Melia, chief executive of Sunderland City Council, said, “I couldn’t be happier to see the film studio plans advancing. It will be brilliant to see the first phase take shape, and to watch local people benefit from the opportunities Crown Works will bring during construction as well as when it opens its doors.”
