Gammon Construction has been awarded the HK$4.2 billion (US$ 531 million) air cargo terminal construction contract, in joint venture with Hip Hing Construction, by Cathay Pacific Services.

The contract for the new terminal at Hong Kong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok, will employ 1000 people at the peak of the project's construction period.

The new terminal, which is approximately 280000 m2, is scheduled for completion in 2013.

Commenting on the contract win, Balfour Beatty chief executive, Ian Tyler, said, "We are delighted to have been awarded this contract to enhance Hong Kong's status as an international airfreight hub. Along with our joint venture partner, we are committed to the delivery of a terminal of the highest quality, while maintaining excellent standards of safety."

Gammon Construction is Hong Kong's largest contractor with over 2500 employees. It is 50% owned by Balfour Beatty and 50% by Jardine Matheson, the major Asian trading and manufacturing group.
