Gammon Construction, a 50:50 joint venture between the UK's Balfour Beatty and Hong Kong-based Jardine Matheson, has been awarded a contract "in excess of" HK$ 1.5 billion (US$ 194 million) for the redevelopment of the Hennessy Centre in the Causeway Bay district of Hong Kong.

Construction of the project, which is being carried out for Hysan Development Company Limited (Hysan), includes a 36-storey mixed retail and office development, featuring a four-level car park and retail basement, and will be completed in 2011.

The Hennessy Centre redevelopment is the first Hong Kong building project that has achieved pre-certification of the highest Platinum level under the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Commenting on the contract award, Balfour Beatty chief executive, Ian Tyler said, "We are delighted to have been selected by Hysan and to be involved with this landmark project. Gammon's advanced technological standards and expertise in building construction are key factors in the contract award."
