A 50:50 joint venture between Gammon Construction and Leighton Asia has been awarded a HK$ 2.88 billion (US$ 370 million) rail contract by Hong Kong's rail operator, MTR Corporation.

The project is to construct the West Kowloon Terminus Approach Tunnel and Track Fan Tunnel section of the Guangzhou - Shenzhen - Hong Kong Express Rail Link, which forms part of China's national high speed rail network. The 300 m long fan-shaped tunnel section will form the transition from the approach tunnel to the terminus at West Kowloon district. Cut and cover construction techniques will be used.

Scheduled for completion in 2015, the contract also includes construction of associated mechanical and electrical work, support buildings and non-rail related work such as a public transport interchange and footbridge network.

Gammon Construction is 50% owned by Balfour Beatty and 50% by Jardine Matheson.
