Clayco announced Burns’ retirement after more than 17 years of service at the design-build company, effective 31 December 2024. However, he remained as chairman of the board of advisors for the company.

Clayco announced on the weekend (22 March), that Burns had passed away.

In a statement, the company said, “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Russ Burns, a respected leader, colleague, and friend whose impact at Clayco—and across the industry—will never be forgotten.

“Russ brought unmatched dedication and integrity to every role he held. His leadership was defined not only by the results he delivered, but by the way he inspired those around him—with humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to doing the right thing.

“Russ played a vital role in shaping Clayco’s success and culture. His contributions laid the foundation for many of the relationships, values, and accomplishments we continue to build on today. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. Russ, you will be greatly missed. We thank you for everything.”

In January this year, Clayco announced that Anthony Johnson, previously executive vice president and president of Clayco’s Industrial Business Unit, would take over as CEO. At the time, Johnson said, “Russ has been an outstanding mentor and leader, and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to carry his vision forward.”
