The 14th World Demolition Summit (WDS) gets underway tonight (Wednesday) as it returns to Europe as a fully in-person event for the first time since 2018.

The Austrian capital city of Vienna is the latest new venue for the demolition industry’s annual gathering, having been scheduled to host two years ago before Covid-19 intervened and the event was ultimately held online.

Organised by the KHL Group and Demolition & Recycling International (D&Ri) alongside the European Demolition Association and the US National Demolition Association, the WDS will once again combine the mix of conference, awards and networking that have become the trademarks of the event since it started in 2009.

The headline sponsor is Volvo Construction Equipment, while other big industry names supporting the event are Komatsu (Platinum Sponsor) and Gold Sponsors Caterpillar, OilQuick, Sennebogen and Steelwrist.

After a drinks reception to allow delegates to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones, the Thursday conference session features speakers from four continents and presentations on projects ranging from cathedrals to power plants, with the role of a demolition company in a major urban space creation project to round things off.

Later on Thursday, the World Demolition Awards will unveil the results of our international judging panel’s deliberations across 12 categories and more than 50 shortlisted entries, as well as revealing the winners of the New Entrant Award and the coveted World Demolition Award itself for the best overall entry.

As in previous years, the evening will close with the announcement of the venue for the 2023 WDS.

And there will be a full review of the event in the November-December print and digital issues of D&Ri, as well as coverage online and in the D&Ri newsletter.
