The European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations (EFCA) has released its Sector Review for 2022, ranking the largest consulting engineering firms in Europe.

The report combines survey data and publicly available information, and ranks the top international firms operating in Europe and top Europe-headquartered companies based on their global turnover.

The report also shows evidence of a shift in priorities towards a greener and more digital future in engineering services for construction and the built environment.

EFCA says, despite the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, companies are making strategic investments, including acquisitions of firms specialising in sustainable infrastructure and digital construction.

These firms are building their capacity and reinforcing their commitment to a more climate-resilient built environment. Digitalisation, urbanisation and sustainability are driving growth in the sector, while the fallout from the pandemic continues to impact supply chains and workers’ mobility.

Sustainability a priority

According to Benoît Clocheret, President of EFCA, the consulting engineering firms are leading the transformation required to implement European Union policies aimed at achieving climate resilience.

Cloceret said, “The report provides evidence that these firms are reversing unsustainable practices and joining up the various stages of design and construction through digital processes.”

Sue Arundale, EFCA’s director general, adds that the strategies being deployed by consulting engineering firms will reverse over-dependence on resource-depleting and carbon-intensive construction practices.

She said, “Larger firms have more capital to lead the industry, but we have not lost sight of SMEs and know that, even as co- or sub-contractors, they can still significantly contribute towards achieving the EU’s climate goals.”
