Dublin airport’s biggest airline carrier, Ryanair, is reported to have lodged a planning appeal against the green light for a €200 million tunnel planned for the airport.

Last month, Fingal County Council granted planning permission to the airport operator, daa for the tunnel under the airport’s ‘Crosswind’ runway.

The planned twin-cell enclosed subterranean tunnel is 700 metres long with the overall alignment being 1.1 km in length.

Ryanair is said to be concerned that the building works will lead to considerable disruption to airport activities and do not believe that alternative solutions have been addressed.

Daa instated the plans with the intention ‘to improve the safety and efficiency of the airfield’ but it was confirmed earlier in the week that Ryanair and the local resident’s group, SMTW Environmental DAC, had lodged a complaint against this.

The underpass is a part of daa’s €1.9 billion Capital Investment Plan and according to the company “will provide both direct and indirect benefits to all operators at the airport.”
