Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has been commissioned by Roadpark Verwaltungs to design a 28 storey, 137 m high tower in countryside near Wörgl, Austria. The structure, which matches the height of the famous Stephansdom church in Vienna, will act as a landmark for the Tyrol Region and a symbol for modern Austria, according to the developers. The 40000 m2 site is adjacent to the A12 autobahn, which forms a key route between southern Germany and northern Italy. The development will comprise two hotels, apartments, offices, shops and a casino, offering a tourist attraction to the 45000 commuters and holidaymakers that pass through the region daily.According to SOM’s UK office, the streamlined form of the tower was developed as the result of analysis of wind forces in the lower Inn valley.
