Cartel raids on Spain's cement manufacturers

21 December 2009

Spain's National Competition Commission (CNC) has launched proceedings against five cement manufacturers suspected of anti-competitive practices. The allegations follow raids carried out on their offices last week.

September saw CNC raid several cement manufacturers' offices in collaboration with officials from the European Commissions competition directorate. The latest raids are thought to follow up on evidence gathered earlier in the year.

The latest CNC raids are thought to focus on the cement and aggregates market in Northern Spain. The five companies raided were Cementos Portland (a subsidiary of contractor FCC), Cemex Espana, Cetya, Vresa and Hormigones Beriain.

The investigation is expected to last for 18 months.
