The Besix-Midmac joint venture - Qatar's Midmac Contracting and Belgium's Six Construct - has been awarded the QAR 2.9 billion (US$ 797 million) main construction contract for the Doha Convention Centre.

The US$ 1.7 billion, 124220 m2 project, which is being constructed for Lusail developer Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, is expected to start later this month and should be completed in 28 months.

Designed by Germany's Murphy Jahn architects, who were also responsible for the Deutsche Post building in Bonn, the Sony Centre in Berlin and Munich Airport, the project also includes a 500 m-high tower.

South Korea's Samsung and Australia's Multiplex are believed to be among the bidders for the 105-storey tower.
