UK-based Balfour Beatty has been awarded part of a near €870 million project with a £16 million (€18.8 million) contract by Network Rail to carry out redevelopment work on Glasgow Queen Street Station in Scotland.

The enabling works will involve the demolition of current platform buildings, including the staff accommodation block, and the construction of a new operations building in order to facilitate the extension of platform one.

The contract is part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, which is a £742 million (€869 million) expansion scheme intended to accommodate growing passenger numbers. By upgrading the railway infrastructure linking Edinburgh and Glasgow, the programme is expected to increase passenger capacity from 20 million to 28 million by 2030, and significantly reduce congestion.

Hector MacAulay, Balfour Beatty managing director for Scotland, said, “The redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station will generate additional community benefit through our commitment to local employment and apprenticeships, and will further support the region’s economy, creating opportunities for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).”

The granting of this contract follows Balfour Beatty’s recent completion of the new Edinburgh Gateway rail station.

Work for the new contract is due to begin this April and finish in spring 2018.
