The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved US$ 800 million in funding for rural and national road upgrades in six provinces in Sri Lanka.

The Integrated Road Investment Programme, or “iRoad”, will upgrade 2,200 km of rural access roads, and restore and maintain 400 km of national roads under five projects in the Southern Province, Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kalutara District of Western Province, Central Province, North Central Province and the North Western province. The aim is to provide all-weather access to towns and villages in rural areas.

The iRoad project will also provide training and support to help national, provincial, and local agencies manage the road network more effectively. iRoad will run until 2024.
