Construction workers in Abu Dhabi

The municipality of Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, UAE has announced plans to develop an environment and health & safety management systems for the building and construction sector. It has launched a call for tenders among consultants in the field to submit proposals for an initial three-year project in the city.

Commenting on the initiative, H.E. Awad Bin Hassom Al Darmaki, who heads the initiative for the city said, " By the year 2012 we envisage a fully regulated and implemented world-class environmental, health and safety system to be set up and fully operational." He continued, "This initiative aims to preserve the well-being of our people at large and to create a safer workplace for the construction workers employed within this advancing market."

The city has identified four key aims with the project - the reduction of waste and emissions in the industry, ensuring safer working environments, providing a healthier environment for its residents and making developments sustainable and more environmentally friendly.

The city has already completed a ‘gap analysis' and is now looking for external consultants to help with the second phase - development and implementation of the strategy. Due to start in August, the three year scheme will entail the development of regulations, recruitment of department staff, establishing a training division and awareness initiatives.
