Skanska wins US$249m Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge contract

Sweden-based construction contractor Skanska secured a US$249 million contract from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to install a main cable dehumidification system on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The project covers all four of the bridge’s suspension cables. Skanska will design and install dehumidification units and acoustic monitoring systems, along with associated electrical and communication infrastructure.

The scope also includes enabling internal inspection of cable panels, replacing all cable band bolts, and upgrading aerial obstruction lights, messenger cables, hand ropes and stanchions.

The company will carry out five years of maintenance and monitoring once the system is commissioned.

Opened in 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge links New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn across a tidal strait where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of its completion its central span of 1,298m was the longest suspension span in the world, and it remains one of the busiest crossings in the US.

The contract was awarded in July 2025, with completion scheduled for September 2029.
