Turner & Townsend has been appointed as strategic delivery partner on the Usahihi Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway, a $3.6bn public–private partnership (PPP) that will deliver Africa’s largest road project to date.
The 459km expressway will connect Kenya’s capital to its main port city, reducing travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa from more than 10 hours to around five. Designed to relieve congestion on the existing A8 highway, the new corridor will feature intelligent transport systems, electric vehicle charging stations, wildlife crossings and climate-resilient design elements.
Turner & Townsend will lead programme management, governance, cost control, risk oversight and project assurance for the scheme. The consortium is led by Everstrong Capital and including TRAC, Lotz to Develop, Ashitiva Advocates, Rebel, Andersen, CPF Group and Kurrent. It is currently preparing the project for its next phase, with a feasibility study currently under review by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
John Rogers, regional director, East Africa, at Turner & Townsend, said, “The Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway is a game-changing landmark project in Kenya which will cut journey times in half greatly improving regional connectivity. The Usahihi Expressway isn’t just a road, it’s a catalyst for economic growth, regional integration and climate-smart development.”
