Vietnam’s most populous city to build bridge over Saigon River

The Department of Transport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has submitted a pre-feasibility report to the municipal administration regarding the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge project. The project will be developed as a vertical-lift bridge and is estimated to require an investment of over VND6 trillion (US$247 million).

The bridge’s main section is created to move vertically, allowing large ships on the Saigon River to pass through to the downtown area of the city. This design is said to have not been used for any other bridge in Vietnam.

Upon completion, the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge and approach roads will total 2.16 kilometres with six lanes. According to the Department of Transport, the bridge alone will be over 1.6 kilometres long.

It is anticipated that the bridge will become a new symbol of the city and is expected to positively impact local socio-economic development.

The design of the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge is said to be similar to the Jacques Chaban-Delmas Bridge spanning the Garonne River in France.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, key traffic infrastructure projects in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area, including four main roads and the technical infrastructure of a northern residential area, have been completed.

These projects are anticipated to be operational by 2025.
