Volvo Construction Equipment’s new PL4608 and PL4611 pipe layers have maximum load capacities of 80 and 110 tonnes, respectively.
The PL4608 and PL4611 represent “a major technical advance” over traditional pipe layers that use side booms, according to the company. Both machines offer a 360° upper body turning capability with full performance and functionality at any point of the turn.
The PL4608 and PL4611 also have a wide gauge base, with a lower centre of gravity. The “hoisting platform” has been enhanced by installing the boom on the equipment’s upper structure, inside the track space.
This, said a Volvo spokesman, gives a larger lift capability, better stability and better operating capacity on slopes.
A longer, larger boom (9 m) than competitive side-boom machines means a higher winch height and better positioning in relation to the trench, said a Volvo spokesman.
“Working from farther away in relation to the trench,” said the spokesman, “avoids possible side-wall collapses.”
