The world’s deepest subsea tunnel

In Boknafjorden, Norway, construction is taking place on a tunnel 392 m below sea level making it the world’s deepest subsea tunnel.

The US$39 billion (€34.53 billion) tunnel is being constructed in order to halve travel times experienced on the existing E39 coastal highway.

Currently the E39 route between Kristiansand in the south and Trondheim in the north is around a 21-hour journey.

The road is an important trade route for Norwegian businesses, as some 60% of the country’s export goods are produced on the West Coast. Around a third of Norway’s 5.3 million people live along the highway, which also serves as a link into the rest of Europe as the E39 continues to Denmark.

Using the bridge and tunneling construction techniques shared in Volvo CE’s video, Norway’s tricky terrain is being conquered by construction firms.
