Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. has won a $400 million contract to construct Phase 1A of the Port of Nome Modification project.

The project has been awarded by the US Army Corps of Engineers, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Phase 1A is the first of four phases and involves the construction of a 1,200ft (366m) causeway extension with about 600ft (183m) of dock face.

Phase 2 will involve dredging of the deep and outer basis up to minus 40ft (12.2m).

The entire harbour extension project aims to provide larger vessels with improved access to the Port of Nomes existing harbour and create a new deep-water basin at a depth of minus 40ft.

Currently, ship transportation is limited by the existing depths in the outer basin of minus 22ft (6.7m). The depth is inadequate to safely accommodate vessels of drafts greater than about 18ft.

Nome’s original harbour was constructed in 1917. The port is a regional hub on the Seward Peninsula, adjacent to Norton Sound, Nome has no access to major road systems and is 545 miles northwest of Anchorage.
