Construction work to expand Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium in England could start within the next 12 months.

Councillors on Leeds City Council have voted in favour of selling council-owned land around the stadium, necessary for the work to go ahead. They also approved a plan to enter a memorandum of understanding with the club’s development partner, Lowy Family Group, although the agreement on the terms of the development is not legally binding.

The club, which has recently won promotion to the Premier League, hopes to expand the Elland Road ground from its current capacity of 37,645 to around 56,500.

It would involve expanding the West Stand, work to which could start in within the next 12 months, according to reports.

A second phase would involve expanding the North Stand.

If the works are completed, they would make Elland Road the seventh-largest football stadium in England.
