Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) unveils its new generation EWR150 and EWR170 short swing excavators featuring the industry’s first retractable ladder to advance safety and access.

Now available in Europe, the new generation EWR150 and EWR170 boast increased reach and lifting capacity. With the shortest rear swing radius in their class and a reduced front swing radius by over 0.5 metres, these machines are ideal for urban environments and tight job sites. From 2026, a Volvo-patented electronically retractable ladder – a first for the industry – will be introduced to the models to provide safe, easy access to the cab, while new four-wheel steering will significantly reduce turning radius.

The EWR150 now includes a 115kW engine, boosting power by 10% and delivering faster cycle times, increased digging force and capability to handle larger attachments. A 10% increase in swing torque enables controlled machine movements for efficient, accurate operation.
Lift more, reach further

Lift capacity and reach are improved with larger lift cylinders and a longer two-piece boom. There are three arm lengths to choose from, and the undercarriage can be fitted with an outrigger, blade or no equipment. An optional 2.75-metre-wide axle adds further stability when lifting over the side. Paired with Volvo Attachments, like buckets and breakers, the EWR150 and EWR170 are designed to perform across a wide range of tasks and applications.
“Since launching the first EWR150 and EWR170 in 2016 and 2018, they’ve firmly established themselves as leaders in their class”, said Marc Engels, Global Product Manager Wheeled Excavators at Volvo CE. “Now the best 17-ton and 15-ton short swing radius wheeled excavators in the industry just got better with the arrival of the new generation.”
Designed for optimal efficiency and uptime
Advanced engine technology and intelligent hydraulics reduce fuel consumption without compromising performance. An advanced electro-hydraulic load sensing system delivers hydraulic power only when needed for precise, smooth operation and enhanced productivity. Features like auto idle, automatic engine shutdown, and an optional extra fuel tank support uptime and efficiency.
Daily maintenance is simplified with grouped greasing points, ground-level service access, and optional hydraulic oil quick fill. A Lockout/Tagout feature adds safety during servicing.

Inside the redesigned cab, operators benefit from improved visibility, low noise, and ergonomic controls. Integrated rear and side-view cameras and optional Volvo Smart View improve safety There’s a new seat with four comfort levels, increased storage, wireless phone charging, USB ports and easy-to-use joystick controls, plus automatic in-cab lights and options such as an air compressor and right-hand sunshade. A new operator interface viewable via a 325mm touchscreen provides easy control over media, camera settings, climate and machine status.
