South Korean contractor Samsung C&T has won a major new contract to build a new gas power and desalination plant in Qatar.

The contractor said it had received a letter of award for the Qatar Facility E Independent Water and Power Production Project last month.

The project involves the construction of the a 2,415MW power plant, combined with a 110 MGID (millions of gallons of water per day) desalination plant and is worth US$2.84 billion.

Samsung C&T was awarded the project after a consortium of Japanese and Korean power companies jointly won the rights to develop the facility for Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and Shikoku Electric Power Co make up the consortium alongside Korea Southern Power Co and Korean Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation.

The new facility will sit on the site of an old power plant around 25 kilometres south of Doha, in the Ras Abu Fontas area.

Sumitomo said the new plant would employ high-efficiency gas turbines and consume less gas and emit lower levels of CO2. In the future, the government of Qatar will explore new plans for carbon capture and storage to reduce CO2 emissions further.
