PCL creates new executive role to lead data centre construction

US-based PCL Construction – the US arm of Canada-based PCL, a family of construction companies – has established a new executive position dedicated to data centre builds, signalling its intention to expand in one of the construction industry’s fastest-growing sectors.

The newly created role will lead PCL’s Mission Critical Center of Excellence, a group focused on hyperscale, retrofit, and Tier IV data center delivery across the US.

Tyler Kautz, a 20-year veteran of PCL and former Seattle (US) district manager, was appointed to lead the new group.

Cathy Orquiola, president of the western US region for PCL Construction, said, “As we expand our mission critical and data centre operations, I’m confident [Kautz’s] leadership will continue to position PCL as the builder of choice in high-tech, fast-growing markets.”

The announcement comes amid a projected rise in global data infrastructure investment, with industry forecasts estimating market growth from US$287 billion in 2025 to more than $1.3 trillion by 2035.

PCL joins a growing list of contractors carving out specialised leadership for advanced technology work. For example, Sweden-based contractor Skanska recently launched its own Advanced Technology Unit to consolidate expertise in data centres, life sciences, and high-tech manufacturing for the US market.
