The section - called Lot H41 Gola del Sill-Pfons - is being built by Webuild and Switzerland-based subsidiary CSC Costruzioni, in addition to joint venture partner Implenia.

This part of the project is 22.5km long and will consist of two main parallel tunnels with 38 cross passages, as well as an underground emergency stop at Innsbruck, access tunnels, exploratory tunnels, and parts of other secondary tunnels says Webuild. A bridge will also be constructed over the Brennero A13 Highway.

On completion, the project will connect Italy and Austria underneath the Alps and will become part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Webuild is currently working on a number of other lots on the Brenner Base Tunnel project, including the Isarco River Underpass and Mules 2-3 in Italy, on which the contract recently hit a key milestone.

In May of this year the company broke through the diaphragm separating lots H71 Isarco River Underpass and Mules 2-3, completing the creation of a 24km-long tunnel that makes up one part of the Brenner Base Tunnel.
