Work begins on US$1 billion port in Senegal

Construction has started on Senegal’s US$1 billion Ndayane deepwater port that, once completed, will boost the country’s position as a major trade hub and gateway to West Africa.

The deep-water port is being developed by Dubai’s state-owned port operator DP World and the Port Authority of Dakar at Ndayane, around 50km south of the capital city of Dakar.

Senegal President Macky Sall laid the foundation stone for the project and commented that the port was the biggest private investment in the West African country.

According to media reports Sall said, “With the Port of Ndayane, Senegal will have state-of-the-art port infrastructure that will reinforce our country’s position as a major trade hub and gateway in West Africa.

“It will unlock significant economic opportunities for local businesses, create jobs, and increase Senegal’s attractiveness to foreign investors.”

According to the agreement, DP World will build and operate the 300ha container terminal.
