Vinci wins Phase 2 of Cairo metro Line 3

A consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projets has won the € 323 million civil engineering contract with Egypt's National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) for Cairo's metro Line 3.

In addition, Vinci's Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires subsidiary, as part of a separate consortium, has won the € 20 million track installation contract.

The civil engineering contract includes construction of a 7.2 km section of tunnel and four underground stations, which are scheduled to opening in October 2013 after 51 months of works.

The track installation contract includes the supply and laying 14 km of track and power rail in the tunnel.

Cairo's first metro line was constructed by Vinci in the early 1980s. It now carries over 2 million passengers a day. The second line (22 km) was opened in the 1990s. It has 20 stations - 12 of them underground - and carries 1.8 million passengers a day.
