Vinci wins London tube upgrade contract

29 December 2009

A joint venture between Taylor Woodrow, part of Vinci Construction UK, and BAM Nuttall has won a UK£ 250 million (€ 277 million) contract from Transport for London (TfL) to upgrade the capital's Tottenham Court Road Tube station.

The existing station will be enlarged to provide twice the present capacity, including a ticket hall almost six times the size of the existing one. New station entrances, modernisation of the existing station passageways and platforms and a new concourse with links to Tottenham Court Road station will also be provided to reduce congestion.

Additional escalators and five lifts will provide step free access throughout the station as well as conventional stair access. New staff accommodation will be located beneath Charing Cross Road.

A new Crossrail Eastern ticket hall structure is also included in the contract.

Externally, improved facilities will be provided for pedestrians, cyclists, bus passengers and other road users including a new piazza.

Construction, due to begin in early 2010, will take 80 months with completion expected by September 2016.
