Vinci’s first US infrastructure PPP is award winning
21 December 2016
A consortium including Vinci has completed work on a 12 km section of the East End Crossing, connecting Indiana and Kentucky.
The work – carried out by Walsh Construction (60%) and Vinci Construction Grands Projets (40%) – included building a 762 m cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River.
Since the project began in 2012, the consortium has also constructed a 512 m dual tube tunnel on the Kentucky approach to the bridge, as well as 19 further engineering structures, including smaller bridges.
Developed as a public-private partnership (PPP), the East End Crossing will now be operated by a consortium led by Vinci Highways (a subsidiary of Vinci Concessions), for a period of 35 years.
The $1 billion crossing – Vinci’s first road infrastructure PPP in the US – was recently awarded the Envision Platinum award for sustainable infrastructure.
Ron Heustis, Project Manager, Indiana Department of Transportation, said, “Strong teamwork and collaboration on sustainability aspects were in evidence throughout the project. The innovative partnership between Indiana and the Commonwealth of Kentucky ensured the project was designed to serve the needs of the entire region today, and for the future.”
