Two contractors to build largest high-voltage transmission line in US history

Quanta Services and Kiewit Energy Group have together won a deal worth $1.7 billion to build Grain Belt Express, which they claim is the largest electric transmission project in US history.

The Grain Belt Express, an Invenergy project, is an 800-mile-long transmission line that uses high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. It will span four states – Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.

It will add 5,000 MW of energy delivery capacity and aims to meet growing demand driven by data centres and manufacturing. Phase one, covering Kansas and Missouri, will start construction in 2026.

Duke Austin, president and chief executive officer of Quanta Services, said, “Grain Belt Express is an important project that supports the country’s energy dominance priority, manufacturing reshoring, mission to lead the world in artificial intelligence and secure our grid.”

Michael Polsky, founder & CEO of Invenergy added, “Interregional transmission is key to unleashing American energy dominance to power our nation’s businesses and strengthen our national security.”
