Three Swedish hospitals for NCC

02 July 2015

Swedish-based contractor NCC and Sörmland County Council have agreed to refurbish and extend three hospitals in Södermanland, Sweden, in a contract valued at about SEK3 billion (€321 million).

The partnership will start immediately with the planning stage, and it is expected that the upgraded hospitals will be completed within eight years.

The hospitals concerned are Mälarsjukhuset in Eskilstuna, Kullbergska sjukhuset in Katrineholm and Nyköpings lasarett. Sörmland County Council has chosen to upgrade these three hospitals as part of a strategic partnering arrangement with NCC, which means that all planning and implementation for the project will be conducted jointly.

Johnny Niskanen, technical manager at Sörmland County Council, said, “With NCC’s expertise and capacity by our side, we feel sure the project can be completed in a professional manner.”

At Mälarsjukhuset in Eskilstuna, which is the single largest part of the project, some older buildings will be demolished, others upgraded and new premises built. The combination of new construction and upgrades will also be applied at the Kullbergska sjukhuset in Katrineholm and at Nyköpings lasarett.

NCC said that renovating and constructing new hospitals was also an investment in sustainability. The new premises will aim to have significantly reduced energy consumption and an improved operating cost, while the employees’ work environment will be enhanced and a more efficient care process will be designed to benefit patients.

Strategic partnering is the key to higher quality and lower costs, according to NCC.

It said this comprised an open partnership over several projects with the same team, adding that the organisation’s learning curve would be used optimally and the parties would learn each other’s needs, processes and strategically important investments, enabling costs to be reduced, quality developed and production time to be shortened.

The first elements of the projects are expected to start in September 2015.
