The incident took place along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train line in Anand district, Gujarat, on Tuesday evening, 5 November.

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), responsible for the project, stated that a temporary steel and concrete block structure used for well foundation work had collapsed.

Two of the trapped labourers died of their injuries on site, according to Anand fire officer Dharmesh Gor.

A third was rescued alive but died later in hospital.

Locals also joined the rescue operation, assisting excavators and cranes to lift the concrete blocks and free the victims.

The NHSRCL has begun a technical investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
